Israeli Airstrikes Kill More Than 50 in S. Lebanon

An Israeli airstrike on southern Lebanon has killed 50 people in the deadliest attack since the Middle East conflict began on July 12th.
An angry Lebanon has further stifled international efforts to stop the fighting by postponing a visit to Beirut by U.S. Secretary of State Condolezza Rice.

Israeli warplanes bombed the southern Lebanese town of Qana, killing at least 50 people, half of them children.
In the deadliest attack of the 19-day conflict, missiles hit while residents were asleep.
Israel says Hezbollah has used the town as the launch site for 40 rockets.
The attacks came a day after Israeli troops pulled back from the Hezbollah stronghold of Bint Jbail.
In a West Bank raid Saturday, Israeli undercover troops killed a top leader of the group Islamic Jihad, Awijan .
Israel Radio says he was responsible for many attacks on Israelis, including 12 suicide bombings.
U.S. Secretary of State Condolezza Rice postponed a visit to Beirut after holding talks with Israeli Prime Minister in Jerusalem.
While expressing sadness over casualties, she did not call for an immediate ceasefire.
At the United Nations, France has circulated its draft resolution on an immediate halt to the fighting among U.N. Security Council members.
The proposal also includes a new buffer zone in southern Lebanon, subject to monitoring by multinational forces and the Lebanese army.
The Security Council is expected to convene early this week, to discuss the matter.
